Comment on The New York Mets Play In Flushing… Right? by Dr. Daniel R. Cillis

In April 1964, I played hookey and attended opening day at Shea Stadium, ticket stub available as proof. Waking up in Corona, I skipped school at Corona JHS and walked to the new ballpark in Corona. The previous year, I watched the construction progress from my Corona classroom window. That same year, the NY World Fair was in full swing in Flushing Meadow Park a few yards from Shea. Flushing Meadow Park spans Corona and Flushing and was later renamed Flushing Meadow Corona Park.
Perhaps the METS wished to associate themselves with the promotional value of the Worlds Fair. Another theory in that Flushing has a higher per capita income than Corona. Despite some leveling, Corona is still the less affluent area today. The METS do have some political cover. The USPO system in Queens divides the entire borough into two major zones: Jamaica and Flushing. Therefore, they are correct to say Flushing when detached from the actual address--and its inconvenient truth. In the same way, the METS would be accurate to say, Citifield in Queens, or in New York, or in the USA. Certaintly, the tag BRONX BOMBERS has not hurt that other NY team. So let the movement start here. If Corona is not good enough, then it should be Citifield in Queens, NY. Pass it on...

I too am a long suffering Jets fan. I spent many Sundays watching Namath, Maynard, Snell, Boozer, Biggs, Granthom, Sample, Turner and others. I remember the Jets in the first Monday Night Football Game and I remember the Heidi Game.

I remember Al Woodall and Al Toon, John Elliot and John Abraham, Curtis Martin and Mark Gastineau, Joe Kleco and Joe Fields, Wesley Walker, Jerome Barkum, Richard Caster, Winston Hill, John Riggins, Boomer and Weeb.

So much history, so much disappointment and now so much promise. So while we relish the past we look to the future when Rex and the boys will bring back glory to the green and white.
